Rob Pfister and Paul Saso met as first-year law students at NYU. Rob’s first visit to New York City was his arrival the weekend before classes began; his father was a farmer and his mother a homemaker. Paul grew up in New Jersey, the son of an auto mechanic and a stay-at-home mom. Both were the first in their families to attend college and earn bachelor’s degrees – Rob from Indiana University, Paul from Drew University.
After law school, Rob clerked in Connecticut, returned briefly to New York, and settled in Los Angeles. Paul, by contrast, has been a committed New Yorker ever since.
Rob and Paul first practiced together at Simpson Thacher, where they represented companies including JPMorgan Chase and Travelers in a variety of high-stakes securities, insurance, and bankruptcy litigation. Together Rob and Paul prepared appellate briefs to the highest courts in New York (opens in a new tab) and New Jersey (opens in a new tab) advocating full marriage equality for same-sex couples, years before the issue was finally resolved by the Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U.S. 644 (2015) (opens in a new tab).
